Fresh lettuce

Has anyone grown lettuce over the winter? Any advice? Nothing beats fresh from the garden and this is one of the crops I hope to keep going this winter under our cloches.

  1. That lettuce looks delicious! I have a garden, but have never grown lettuce over the winter...I have a fall crop of carrots growing right now though. Can't wait to read your winter gardening updates.

  2. Hi I'm visiting from VB. No I haven't grown any over the winter I have heard of people using cold frames and have been told if you can keep the snow off it is possible seems hard to believe. I have also heard of people growing it in containers in the house. Our family of 8 goes through so much I wonder if it would be possible but would love to try!! Hope someone can shed some light on this for you.

  3. Val, we grow lettuce year round, but my climate is so different from yours. As long as you can keep the soil warm and the frost off the leaves it should grow. Are you direct soil planting or planting in pot? Are you using any cold frames or planting in your home, garden, green house? In the past, I have had good luck with a huge pot in front of my dining room window. We have since built a green house so that is where the plants are now.

  4. Once I did it without trying. Planted a fall crop in my cold frame, and it snowed early in the season. It was a deep snow and I didn't bother keeping the cold frame cleaned off. In the spring we looked in and saw green. It had been growing all winter!
I just planted kale, beets, lettuce and spinach a week ago. I plan on keeping it covered and hope to harvest it early winter.

  5. So we were thinking about planting in our raised beds, under the cloches. This spring we used clocheing fabric and this winter, we planning to use clear plastic. I think we will go for lettuce, chard and carrots. I w uld live to add parsnips and turnips...and broccoli and cabbage...and cauliflower, but alas, reality.

Now that it has been mentioned, we might have to plant some lettuce inside. We have the perfect window.

  6. Oooo, growing lettuce inside through the winter-now there's an idea! Since lettuce is a cool-weather crop, I wonder if the fact our house is rather cool through the winter would make a difference?

  8. Hi Val, Renee from VoiceBoks. I don't have enough yard (or good soil) for a garden. So, I grow lettuce inside my house with my Aerogarden! I got it as a gift last year and LOVE it! It tastes great and I don't have to worry about pesticides.
